She Didn't Just Change Her Name—She Honored the Man Who Raised Her - August 2026
How did we connect?
I contacted a giveaway winner to discuss session ideas!! I was so excited to have conducted met 1st giveaway and to create something special with my client!
But what I heard next, I was NOT expecting.
The Session Idea:
My client explained that her adult adopted daughter had legally changed her last name to theirs and she wanted to reveal the surprise to her adopted father, through our session.
My eyes instantly filled up in tears, my heart pounded and my I was at a loss of words. This session was so incredibly special, all that ran through my head was “I NEED to exceed the families expectations with this one”
I cleared my throat and finally after what seemed like way too long of silence, I said “ OMG YES, Let’s do it!!!”
The Location:
Months and months of planning went into this session. We needed a location that was special. Somewhere that was not crowded and somewhere the family could all share and enjoy this special moment in together, in peace. Rayshell Ranch in Loxahatchee, FL offered exactly that!
What makes Rayshell Ranch especially appealing is its balance of rustic elegance and convenience. The venue offers a secluded, country feel while remaining easily accessible from Palm Beach County.
There was a small wooden bridge with a perfect walk over curve to it. My client had a sign made with her new official legal name on it and wanted it displayed at the end of the bridge. Her vision was that as she walked over with her dad, he would be the first to see and read it.
THE DAY FINALLY CAME!!
I arrived to the venue about 30minutes earlier. I was so nervous I thought I was going to throw up! I wanted everything about this session to go perfectly for this family. They deserved nothing but perfection!
I got the sign set up and I found a perfect hiding spot nearby, behind the sign. I wanted to make sure to be able to capture the families facial expressions as they walked over that bridge.
Everyone knew what the session was about, except dad. He was told it was family photo day after winning my giveaway.
The BIG REVEAL!
I held my breath as I watched everyone approach the bridge. I set up my zoom lens and let out the slowest breath.
I see dad & daughter walking hand in hand. Mom, brother and grandpa start to walk slower to hang back behind them. Dad walks across the bridge and sees the sign. He stops in his tracks, takes a moment to read the sign. He instantly drops his head down and I see the staggered breaths coming from his chest. He turns to his daughter and she bursts into tears hugging her dad.
Everyone had tears flowing down their face, not a dry eye in the area!!
My final moment:
As I packed up my camera and replayed the moments I’d just witnessed, I couldn’t stop thinking about how powerful love can be. Not the kind that’s defined by biology, but the kind that’s shown up every day through unwavering support, sacrifice, and choosing each other over and over again.
Watching her place that sign in her dad’s hands wasn’t just a surprise reveal—it was a thank you. It was years of love, guidance, and fatherhood wrapped into one unforgettable moment.
As photographers, we often talk about freezing moments in time. But every so often, we’re given the privilege of preserving something much deeper—a piece of someone’s legacy. This was one of those moments.
That day, I wasn’t just photographing a legal name change. I was witnessing a daughter tell the man who raised her, without needing many words,
“You have always been my dad.”
And that is a story I’ll carry with me long after the shutter clicked.
